Winning isn't everything. Losing is important, too. How the game is played is a factor in what is learned about winning and losing.
A child learns optimism and pessimism from the adults in her/his life. So- pay attention to yourself! Children are learning even when you aren't teaching.
Optimism is important if you want your child to be happy and to succeed in life. It is the best way we know to ward off depression.
Current "self-esteem" programs aren't working. The "self-esteem" programs being taught in many arenas are shallow pools of "feel good" statements. Our children can see to the bottom of the pools even though adults seem unable to. The bottom is a slippery one that slides right into the open jaws of pessimism.
Traditional religion and citizenship lessons do better than our current self-esteem programs when it comes to warding off depression and producing positive self images. |
